Choose between ChatGPT and Claude by testing the work your team needs to finish, the sources it may use and the review it requires. A fluent answer in a demonstration does not establish a useful business system. Start with a suitable business arrangement, compare both on the same permitted cases and assess accepted output alongside total effort and cost.
Neither tool is the universal winner. A team can standardise on one, use both for distinct purposes, or keep a current tool that already meets the need. The useful question is which arrangement your people can use and run well.
This is Build n Bloom's selection method, rather than a model leaderboard or a live price comparison. Plans and features change; check the provider's current terms before purchasing.
Describe the job before comparing products
Write down the input, useful output, reviewer and next step. “Help with operations” is too broad to test. “Prepare an internal summary of these permitted supplier updates, showing any changes to delivery dates for the coordinator to check” gives the comparison a boundary.
Keep an alternative in the test. A clearer template, an existing software feature or a simple integration may meet the need with less ongoing work. If the problem is that nobody maintains the delivery-date record, a different chatbot alone will not resolve it.
For a recurring service your firm already sells, define what professional review must remain. For internal work, define who accepts the result and where it goes. These decisions make a product comparison useful.
Compare a business arrangement with individual use
The choice includes ownership, access and administration as well as response quality. Record who owns the workspace, who pays, how people join and leave, and what happens to company work when someone changes roles.
OpenAI states that business data is not used for model training by default. Anthropic states the same default for its commercial products, subject to the exceptions it describes, including explicitly submitted feedback. See OpenAI's business data commitments and Anthropic's commercial-data policy. Those statements do not establish permission to use a client's information, a retention period or the suitability of every connected application.
Do not assume that a personal subscription becomes company-managed because an employee uses a work email address. Check the actual account and workspace arrangement. Our personal-account transition guide provides an inventory to do that without casually combining private and company material.
Use the same test sheet for both tools
Choose representative cases you have permission to use. Include ordinary work, missing information, conflicting sources and an instruction the system should decline or refer to a person. Use the same task, source versions and acceptance criteria. Record the product, plan, available settings and date so the result has context.
If columns don't fit, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table and use the arrow keys.
| Test question | What to observe | What would change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Does the output do the job? | Reviewer accepts, corrects or rejects against written criteria | A polished answer still needs substantial reconstruction |
| Can the reviewer check the source? | References lead to the relevant permitted material | Citations are absent, misleading or inaccessible |
| What happens when information is missing? | The gap is visible and routed to the right person | The output invents a complete answer |
| Can the right people use it? | Operator and reviewer permissions work as intended | Useful material becomes visible to an unintended role |
| What does the whole job cost? | Preparation, review, correction, operation and provider charges | Faster drafting produces more review work |
| Can the team maintain it? | A named owner can update instructions, sources and access | Only the original enthusiast knows how it works |
This is a decision record, not a universal scoring algorithm. A failed access boundary may rule out an arrangement regardless of its writing quality. A small stylistic preference may be easily resolved by better instructions.
A fictional example: preparing a customer reply
This example is illustrative, not a client result or a comparison of current model performance.
A small business wants a draft reply about a delivery change. Its test pack contains a customer request, the current delivery policy and an older policy that should not govern the answer.
For each candidate arrangement, the team asks for a draft with the applicable policy passage. The customer lead checks whether the draft uses the current policy and leaves an exception for a person to decide. Another case removes the delivery date: the useful response should expose the gap rather than promise a date.
The team records review and correction as well as drafting effort. If both arrangements pass, existing tools, administration and operator preference may decide the choice. If neither handles conflicting sources reliably, the next step may be a better source set and retrieval design. Buying another plan is a hypothesis to test, rather than an established solution.
When should you consider Enterprise?
Consider it when a documented requirement cannot be met by a suitable smaller-team arrangement. Examples to investigate include identity management, administration, retention, procurement terms or a contractual security requirement. Verify the exact feature and its availability with the provider; do not infer it from the word “Enterprise”.
For Claude, consult the current plan comparison and seek clarification where a help page and pricing page disagree. We deliberately avoid fixed context-window and role-permission claims here. For either provider, record the requirement, the evidence it is met and any condition that remains unresolved.
Enterprise is not automatically the right purchase for a small team, and it does not remove the need for a useful task, permitted data and human review. A procurement decision and an implementation decision answer different questions.
Decide what belongs in the workspace and what needs a build
A person using a business workspace to prepare and check a piece of work may need configuration, instructions and training. A process that must react to another system, make repeatable checks, maintain a review queue or write an approved result back may need integration or a separately scoped build.
Do not assume that subscription access grants all API access or pays for every connected application. Check current billing, credits and permissions. The guide to ChatGPT, Claude or a custom AI build compares these routes without assuming custom work is better.
Record the decision so the team can use it
Keep a short decision note: the job, permitted sources, tested cases, chosen arrangement, named owner, reviewer, unresolved issues and a date to revisit the choice. Explain why it is sufficient for this task. That is more useful than declaring a permanent winner between two rapidly changing products.
ChatGPT + Claude Implementation starts with the same questions. We can help choose a useful task, shape the arrangement and test it with the people who will use it. The next step is a free 25-minute Fit Call; detailed work is quoted separately.
